Samsung has announced the Samsung SCX-4623FW, a wireless laser multifunction printer geared toward small business, home office and personal at-home users. This compact MFP has the same stylish black trim as other Samsung office devices, and incorporates many user-friendly features.

The one-touch Wi-Fi Protected Set-Up (WPS) button lets users connect wirelessly with one press of a button. After the user selects the WPS button on the router and then on the printer, the SCX-4623FW will automatically connect to the wireless network. The SCX-4623FW also comes with Samsung’s AnyWeb Print software, which allows users to print just the information they need, rather than printing several Web pages. Using this software, users can select, drag and drop contents of interest from various Web pages onto a blank page which can then be saved or printed.

The SCX-4623FW has a rated print speed of up to 23 pages per minute (ppm). Its 250-page paper tray uses an enclosed paper cassette to prevent dust buildup. The SCX-4623FW’s rounded edges and compact size (12.6 inches by 16.4 inches by 16.1 inches) help the MFP fit in smaller home office spaces.

Two variations of toner yield cartridges give you the option between a standard 1,500-page yield and 2,500-page yield to fit to your printing needs. Because the SCX-4623FW shares the same toners as Samsung’s ML-2525 series, SCX-4600 and SCX-4623F printers, the same toner can be used across various machines.

The SCX-4623FW is Energy Star compliant, and consumers less than 45W of energy in standby mode and 10W in sleep mode.

The SCX-4623FW will be available from retailers and e-tailers in late June June for $249.99.

According to Kyle Morrison, Project Ink’s owner, the printer’s media versatility and water-based HP latex inks have already enabled him to increase business, produce more of his work in house and improve his work environment.

Until recently, Project Ink relied on a non-HP solvent-based printer for some jobs and outsourced others to a print service provider operating an HP Designjet L65500 printer with HP latex inks.

When Morrison learned about water-based HP latex inks and recyclable HP media options, he decided to install an HP Designjet L25500 in his print shop.

He said: ‘The media versatility alone allows us to print more in house.

‘I can go from poster paper to traditional and recyclable banners to fabric without having to make any adjustments,’ added Morrison.

He has already used many of the HP printing materials designed together with HP latex inks and the Designjet L25500, including the PVC-free Wall Paper, the White Satin Poster Paper and Dupont Tyvek Banner.

‘For the Jade Aveda Salons, we used HP’s Wrinkle Free Flag with Liner to complete a job we would normally outsource,’ said Morrison.

Project Ink also produced posters and wallpaper for the salon.

Unlike most printers that use solvent inks, the Designjet L25500 with HP latex inks is claimed to produce odourless prints.

In addition to reducing the environmental impact of printing a variety of applications, the Designjet L25500 enables Project Ink to reduce the waste associated with traditional large-format printing, according to HP.

A free HP programme for recycling original HP ink cartridges and printheads is available.

HP is offering the large-format media take-back programme in the US and Europe, through which most HP recyclable signage media can be returned.

Some recyclable papers can be recycled through commonly available recycling programmes.

Recycling opportunities for these products are currently only available in limited areas and customers should consult local recycling resources about recycling these products.

In a bid to inject some spark into stodgy home printers, HP has introduced a new all-in-one touchscreen printer that can directly connect to the web and print coupons, maps, movie tickets, news and weather information without the need for a PC.

HP has also taken the idea of apps, popularized by smartphones such as iPhone and T-Mobile G1, and extended it to its product. That means the company’s latest printer will come preloaded with HP applications that can be accessed via the touchscreen panel. HP will also allow users to create and download apps from their site later this year.

“By giving people access to the content they want at the touch of a finger, the ability to customize their printing experience and create their own apps, we are driving a significant shift in how people will be printing in the future,” says Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president, imaging and printing group, HP.

That means picture yourself just turning on this printer going to Fandango and printing movie tickets or accessing Coupons.com for the latest grocery deals, or printing directions right off the device.

The new printer comes with a rather clunky name–the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web, and a hefty price tag. It will be available starting fall for $400.

The printer will have a 4.3-inch LCD touchscreen and can print, fax, copy and scan. It can also print directly from Wi-Fi-enabled PCs, Bluetooth-enabled devices, iPhone and the iPod touch.

The device’s user interface seems fairly easy to use and it will have the ability to browse the web, though it is not likely to be a complete browser. Among the early HP app partners will be USA Today, Google including mpas and calendar, Fandango, Coupons.com and Web Sudoku. The printer will also connect directly to a user’s Snapfish account to view, print and upload photos.

Bringing maps, news and coupons functionality to a printer makes it more likely that the average user will get more value from their printer. But unless HP can bring that $400 price tag down significantly, this could end up as a niche product.

HP today unveiled a new category of web-enabled printing solutions designed for the cloud that will, for the first time, allow people to:

Print from any email device to any new ePrint-enabled printer from anywhere in the world through the new HP ePrint platform;(1)

Store      documents or files in the cloud and print direct when needed;

Transform their printers into publishing platforms from which they can customize print apps and schedule timed delivery of content – such as news from msnbc.com and Yahoo! and creative after-school activities from Disney – directly to their home or business printers;(2)

Manage and customize their full printing experience through the new HP ePrintCenter to enjoy relevant, fun and interesting content that is formatted for efficient printing.

To showcase these new solutions, HP announced a full suite of web-empowered e-All-in-One printers for home and business that start at $99.(3) These will be the first printers able to “talk” to the “Google Cloud” without requiring a local proxy PC or web appliance, which means people will be able to access Google Docs, Photos and Calendar directly from their printers. A selection of new print apps from partners such as Yahoo!, msnbc.com, Facebook®, Live Nation, Crayola, Reuters, DocStoc and Picasa Web Albums™ also will be available.

“We are once again revolutionizing printing to make web-empowered, cloud-enabled printing the new industry standard,” said Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. “We know that our customers want an easy way to print their content, anywhere, anytime. We’re making that a reality today by giving people the power to print from any web-connected device – smartphones, iPads, netbooks and more – to any printer in our portfolio above $99. The world has changed.”

HP web-connected products and services are supported by a digital print advertising platform that can be leveraged by print app partners. Customers can get premium content at no additional cost and brands can add value to their audience by populating select print content with customized messages, promotions and information like coupons or local services.

It’s not often that new printer software steals the show from printer hardware, but Canon has just released a new series of inkjet printers with software that enables you to easily print still images from video.

That means you can worry less about capturing that perfect moment. The catch? You have to use a Canon digital camera to use this feature.

Still, the Full HD Movie Print software is impressive.

All new Pixma printers come with the software. You shoot video and then import the footage to your PC or Mac to easily isolate the split-second image you want.

The software allows you to view video frame by frame, or more easily, set it to capture a specific number of frames, which you can then review for the best shot. When you find one you like, simply press the camera icon and the software will save the image as a jpeg file. The images are resized at a comparatively small resolution of 2 megapixels, however.

The software is intuitive and cool. The new printers are comparatively prosaic, by comparison, even though they have been redesigned and are clad in a glossy black chassis. They are all designed to deliver quality photo prints as well as traditional documents.

Two new all-in-one (AIO) models have built-in Wi-Fi for wireless printing, and all four new AIOs print, scan, and copy documents.

The $150 Pixma MG5220 Wireless Photo AIO Printer pumps out 4-by-6-inch prints in a speedy 20 seconds. It has a 2.4-inch LCD for viewing photos and also features auto-duplexing and a two-way paper feed can help reduce paper usage.

The $80 Pixma MP495 Wireless Photo AIO printer represents a bargain Wi-Fi-enabled printer. Its print speeds are slower, however, requiring 41 seconds for a 4-by-6-inch photo, and it lacks a flip-up LCD for photo review.

The $130 Pixma MG5120 has auto-duplex printing, which saves paper for regular text print jobs. You can review images on its 2.4-inch LCD, and it prints very handsome 4-by-6 photo prints in approximately 39 seconds. It lacks built-in wireless, however.

The Pixma MP280 Photo AIO is a bargain at $70. It’s very compact, but doesn’t include built-in Wi-Fi, and its print speeds are slower.

And for those who don’t require scanning or copying, the $100 Pixma iP4820 pumps out 4-by-6-inch photos at 20 seconds and has auto-duplexing and two-way paper feeds.

Canon also announced new support for smartphone print apps. In addition to existing apps for the iTroika – the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch — Canon has added a printing app for Android phones. They all enable you to wirelessly print images from phones that have the apps loaded.

Over the weekend I purchased a new HP Wireless All-In-One Printer (Photosmart C 4780). It took some time to set up and connect to my HP Tablet. The installation disk gave me an issue and had to restart the installation.

The time to install was greater than anticipated however I did not think about the software (scanner, copier) that had to be installed as well as the printer drivers.

All in all it installed with only one hitch and I was satisfied with that.

After getting the drivers installed then came the ‘network’ connection fun. Did I mention that this installation was in a 29 ft. travel trailer in the woods at a campground?

My network is a HP Mini running Verizon Access Manager and that is how I wirelessly connect to the Internet while on the road. I use Connectify (free software) as a hub so that my tablet PC can also connect to the Internet via the HP Mini.

I was not sure how Connectify (or the printer) would handle this network.

Once the printer drivers were installed all I did was follow the instructions that came with the printer for connecting to a network. It worked like a charm.

Now I am one happy camper.

You wouldn’t necessarily call the HP-85 a portable computer, but the 20-pound case was definitely a huge step towards the laptops that HP sells today – and a sign of the easy upgradability you expect in desktop PCs today. These machines had modest performance, but considering it was 1980, people were more than willing to buy one for about $3,200.

As you may have guessed from the picture, the HP-85 personal computer was a totally self-contained, portable system for both technical professionals or the beginning small-computer user. The HP-85 was based on an 8-bit microprocessor and combined an alphanumeric keyboard, CRT screen, thermal printer tape drive unit, user read/write memory and a ROM operating system in one portable package. It had 32K ROM and 16K RAM.

In short, it was “Designed for Today and Tomorrow….whether you’re in science, engineering, industry or business.” The idea of an upgradable machine was a big selling point back then.

What else happened in 1980?

There were a number of advances – though you might not think some of them as life-changing – in 1980. I know a number of people who spent entire allowances on Pac-Man. In 1980, Pac-Man (a.k.a. Pakkuman in Japan) first gobbled pellets. Rubik’s Cube is first sold as a brain-bending toy.

And then there were some serious events. Mount St Helens blew its top in Washington State. Ronald Reagan got elected to office in Washington. Unfortunately, John Lennon was assassinated in Central Park. The USSR invaded afghanistan and the US protested by boycotting the 1980 Olympic Games. This is also the year CNN first introduced the 24-hour news cycle when it was first established in 1980.

The analyst firm found that sales of colour toner across EMEA rose 2.7 per cent year on year, counter to the overall collapse of the print and consumables market seen last year.“Demand for colour toner was kept afloat by a number of factors,” said IDC in a statement.“Ongoing colour adoption in the office continued despite the economic slowdown, and many businesses are believed to have used extensively internal production of colour marketing collaterals during the economic slowdown to reignite sales.”

OEMs with a high proportion of colour in their toner consumables offering did somewhat better than rivals, especially as colour lasers are increasingly being adopted through managed services contracts. There is also relatively little competition from third-party providers, according to IDC senior analyst Mario Lombardo.“Colour toner third-party providers have come a long way in recent years, developing decent-quality products,” he said.“However, complexity of compatible colour toner development and high investments required in the process make the majority of third-party providers still focus on low-end monochrome products.”

Overall, the toner consumables market in EMEA is expected to recover this year, with a 3.4 per cent compound annual growth rate predicted until 2014. Colour is 25 per cent of the total toner market, but this share is tipped to expand.“We expect the overall colour toner market to be further boosted by growing availability of cheaper compatible colour offerings,” added Joanna Pupkowska, EMEA programme manager for consumables at IDC.“Naturally, this trend will also be strongly triggered by a general transition to colour devices in office space.”

Dell is committed to becoming the greenest technology company on the planet. We are reducing our environmental impact by designing energy-efficient products, undertaking responsible manufacturing and running easy-to-use recycling programs. Environmental considerations are built into every stage of the Dell product lifecycle. Our measures start with development and design, span manufacturing and operations and continue across customer use and product recovery.

Other environmental measures at Dell include increasing our use of recycled-content paper and paper certified by the US Forestry Stewardship Council.

One of the most direct ways we can reduce our impact on the environment is by helping our customers recycle their computer equipment – either to make the most of devices that still work, or to dispose of old equipment responsibly. By doing this, we help prevent waste and pollution.

Dell is a global industry leader in recycling. In 2006, we became the first technology company to offer free recycling of its products to consumers anywhere in the world – with no exceptions. In 2006, our product recovery programs nearly tripled – growing 264 percent. Dell is the first computer company to offer no-charge worldwide computer recycling for its products. As a result, we dramatically expanded our consumer recycling programs. Dell’s goal is to recover 125 million kilograms of discarded product by fiscal year 2010 through asset recovery programs. Since introducing its computer recycling service to Australia and New Zealand in 2004, Dell Australia has helped customers reuse and recycle more than 800 tonnes of computer equipment.
